I hope you enjoy this list of links &#8211; it&#8217;ll keep you busy for a while.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rescue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In September, news came out that the Geelong Animal Welfare Society had some pretty shonking practices &#8211; covered extensively by <a href=\"http:\/\/deathrowpets.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/26\/geelong-animal-welfare-society\/\">Deathrowpets<\/a>. \u00a0SavingPets did a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.savingpets.com.au\/2011\/10\/the-proof-w-needed-to-realise-killing-is-never-kindness\/\">report<\/a>\u00a0(or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savingpets.com.au\/2011\/10\/the-irresponsible-public-strikes-again\/\">two<\/a>) on the situation as well. However, recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geelongadvertiser.com.au\/article\/2012\/02\/06\/305811_news.html\">good news<\/a> came out. \u00a0Shelter killings have been slashed. \u00a0Read SavingPets&#8217; report: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savingpets.com.au\/2012\/02\/geelong-animal-welfare-society-five-months-on\/\">Geelong Animal Welfare Society 5 months on<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dear Dog Pounds, It&#8217;s not &#8216;Euthanasia&#8217; and you aren&#8217;t being &#8216;forced&#8217; to do it. From <a href=\"yesbiscuit.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/03\/dear-dog-pounds-its-not-euthanasia-and-you-arent-being-forced-to-do-it\/\">YesBiscuit!<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Honest Dog spoke about &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.honestdog.com\/2012\/02\/02\/mending-the-rescue-wall\/\">Mending the Rescue Wall<\/a>&#8216; &#8211; how rescue can sometimes be a little too harsh with adoption candidates. \u00a0(They also made a post with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.honestdog.com\/2012\/02\/06\/my-first-aid-kit-is-laughed-at-but-used-often\/\">a handy list of things to have a doggy-human first aid kit<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thatmutt.com\/2012\/02\/06\/does-it-take-longer-for-black-dogs-to-get-adopted\/\">Does it really take longer for black dogs to be adopted?<\/a> It is a myth that is self perpetuating? ThatMutt.com examines the issue. (Also created a lovely post talking about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thatmutt.com\/2011\/06\/27\/reasons-to-buy-a-dog-vs-rescue-a-dog\/\">buying a dog vs rescuing a dog<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>A firm article from Jez Rose on <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jezrose.co.uk\/the-commodity-culture-should-i-get-a-dog-what-breed-of-dog-is-best-to-get.html\">dogs becoming a commodity<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0a must read for those considering getting a dog as it looks at whether you should get a dog and what kind of dog to get.<\/p>\n<p>Love and a Six Foot Leash talks about a rescue dog who &#8216;came back&#8217;, and <a href=\"http:\/\/loveandaleash.com\/2012\/01\/31\/hes-back-when-cupids-arrow-misses\/\">the\u00a0phenomena\u00a0of returned dogs in rescue<\/a>. (And also <a href=\"http:\/\/loveandaleash.com\/2012\/02\/07\/helping-a-petunia-bloom\/\">the importance of finding the right foster home<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>The shame of shelters are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nathanwinograd.com\/?p=8320\">the empty cages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/badrap-blog.blogspot.com.au\/2012\/01\/olive-interrupted-when-shelters-mission.html\">When a shelter&#8217;s mission loses sight of their dogs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/for-the-pits.blogspot.com.au\/2012\/01\/putz-didnt-sit-on-command-obviously.html\">Putz didn&#8217;t sit on command, so\u00a0obviously\u00a0needed to be killed.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Training &amp; Behaviour<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A very honest post on Tricks for Treats, revealing <a href=\"tricksfortreats.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/06\/no-longer-sick-but-still-tired\/\">the stress, trials, tribulations, and fatigue from living with a problematic dog<\/a>. Anyone who owns a dog with issue should very much read this &#8211; you&#8217;re not alone.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia McConnell posed the question: <a href=\"www.theotherendoftheleash.com\/is-silence-golden\">Is silence golden?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>TrueDog talks about <a href=\"http:\/\/truedogblog.blogspot.com.au\/2012\/02\/desensitization-decisions-and-discovery.html\">dealing with reactivity, particularly bike reactivity, in dogs<\/a>. \u00a0This post examines management and desensitisation, and ultimately deciding on the best process for your dog.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"ahimsadogtraining.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/08\/help-for-the-leash-reactive-dog-bat-cartoon\/\">A lovely illustration on Behaviour Adjustment Training (BAT) from Ahimsa Dog Training.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Optimal Dog looked at some <a href=\" www.theoptimaldog.com\/2011\/10\/05\/building-the-perfect-working-dog-through-modern-science\/\">academic studies on working dogs <\/a>&#8211; some great links and analysis, which will make you think about training dogs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/canine-corner\/201202\/long-tails-versus-short-tails-and-canine-communication\">Long Tails Versus Short Tails and Canine Communication<\/a> with Stanley Coren.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reactivechampion.blogspot.com.au\/2012\/02\/dentists-gift.html\">A thought provoking post<\/a> from Crystal at Reactive Champion, talking about allowing dogs to predict our behaviours by &#8216;warning&#8217; them what we&#8217;re going to do.
