See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/leemakennels.com\/blog\/aboutblog\/the-dunbar-index\/\">index<\/a>.<\/small><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Have you heard about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openpaw.org\/\">Open Paw<\/a>?\u00a0 It\u2019s a shelter program designed to make pets happier in shelter environments, and improve their chances of finding a new home.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openpaw.org\/about\/minimum_health.html\">minimal health guidelines<\/a>, kennel dogs need to meet 3 unfamiliar people a day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/leemakennels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/stock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1315\" title=\"Collie working breed type dog in a shelter.\" src=\"http:\/\/leemakennels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/stock-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Collie working breed type dog in a shelter.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/leemakennels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/stock-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/leemakennels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/stock.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>They advocate a classical conditioning approach of just \u2018throwing treats\u2019 at the dogs as you walk past, irrelevant to the behaviour.\u00a0 Some have concerns that this rewards barking behaviour but, in reality, the dog often has a pause between barking behaviour and acknowledging the reward, and it\u2019s more likely the dog will associate his quietness with the treat.\u00a0 (Dog can\u2019t sniff a treat and woof at the same time!)<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to produce a quiet and pleasant environment in shelters, which people enjoy visiting.\u00a0 The program also seeks to produce dogs that are \u2018automatically\u2019 well behaved (from all or none training) and more likely to stay in their new home.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to learn more about Open Paw, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.animalcafe.co\/animal-shelters-new-model-for-adoption-success-kelly-g-dunbar\/\">AnimalCAFE podcast<\/a> may be entertaining for you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you heard about the Open Paw?
