The Week (+ Some) in Tweets – 12th March

I haven’t summarised my tweets for a little while now, so this is quite a big list of tweets. I hope it keeps you entertained this Tuesday morning.

Spay and Neuter (Desexing)

I was so excited when I found this video, depicting castration of a dog by injections into the scrotum. This science has huge implications for neutering worldwide, particularly because this permanent neutering is done without anaesthetic. A huge step forward.

Paws & Learn explained how mandatory spay and neuter won’t work if no one knows that they are legally required to spay and neuter… Duh!  The Animal Protective Assocation of Missouri explained how mandatory spay/neuter laws often increase shelter euthanasia.

Don’t neuter your pet! – Dr Becker talks about myths surrounding neutering.

Dog Breeds and Crufts Stuff

Over on the Honest Dog, an interesting plan is put forward on improving cancer rates in flat coat retrievers.

I discovered a dog breed I hadn’t heard of before! The English Shepherd.

Interesting video showing pictures of how dog breeds have changed over the years.

The creator of Pedigree Dogs Exposed talks about her flat coated retriever, and how that dog inspired the documentary.

Does the bulldog need saving?

No Kill and Rescue

Nathan Winograd was on fox talking about Reducing pet euthanasia (video).

The In Dog We Trust blog wrote about the misconceptions regarding rescue that compare it to animal hoarding.

A different perspective on rescue from Time 4 Dogs. (Also from Time 4 Dogs: A post about pets, HSUS and legislation and a post on a rescue dog entered at Westminster.)

Kids work to get rescue for a dog when the shelter system fails.

This is a bit different… A non-dog blog talking about experiences of owning a dog inappropriate to your lifestyle. An honest piece.

Dog Training

True Dog takes a scientific approach to dealing with her dog’s reactivity. I look forward to hearing her progress.

Or fish training (video)…

Crystal’s comprehensive (as normal) notes from a recent seminar with Jane Killon, talking about reinforcement training. (Crystal also posted a great post about the pros and cons of flexi leads.)

You’re not an abusive dog trainer, are you? (A post by Terrierman, who also posted about the upcoming conference: with IADP (International Association of Dog Professionals).)

Dr Yin: Learn to Earn Program.

Awesome border terrier freestyle video!

Grandfather believes family pit bull saved his grandson.

Dog Health

Quality of Life of Obese Dogs Improves when they Lose Weight.

A found this article interesting because it refers to a dog that develops rabies, despite being vaccinated 7 years ago.  I have so many questions about this! Was the dog ever titre tested for immunity? That is, do we know if the vaccine ever worked? And if it did, when did it wear off? Or was this a dog that just never developed immunity from vaccination? So many questions!

Other Dog Stuff

The benefits that children gain from having pets.

Rutland Manor Labradoodles are critiqued by “Florida Girl in Sydney” blog.  The thing I love about this is the legitimacy… This blogger is not a dog blogger, she’s just a regular, every day puppy buyer, who had so much go wrong…

A few posts I enjoyed from Vets Behaving Badly.  One was an amusing analysis of blog statistics, while also writing about their badly behaving clients.  On a more serious note, make sure you tell your vet about any over the counter medications your dog is on, and a story on a late night summons.

Pet the nice doggie – at your peril.  A post asking for respectful approaches to strange dogs.

The Breeder’s Code.

An exciting list of activities you can do with your dog.

Some fun posts from Follow the Piper this week: About a dog named Uggie, about Westminster Dog Show history, about gray wolves, and the two rescue great danes recently in the news.

Book review: When You Have to Say Goodbye, from the KC Dog Blog.

My parents visited PawsWay when they were in Canada recently, and it looks pretty cool. It’s like a dog museum!

Awesome underwater dog photos.

Insights into BSL – the details the Victorian governemtn don’t want you to know about its ‘dangerous dog’ legislation from SavingPets.

Not Dog Stuff

Awesome photos of the Black Swallow – a fish who literally bites off more than chewable.

I had some photography featured on the Adelaide Reader!  Firstly, some photos taken at Cloverhill (SA) and then some pumpkins.

  1. Great as always! Wow, the one on how the breeds have changed made me sick, especially the German Shepard. Gross. That’s one of the reasons I chose Nola’s breeder, they bred for leaner and not as long, the “hunting look” if you will

    • Glad you enjoy these posts, Nola’s mummy. 🙂 I have a lot more breed-change links queued for me to post on Twitter, so I’m guessing I’ll have more of interest next week for you.

  2. Thanks for putting together all these great links. There is so much information here, I really like the different opinions on desexing animals. Thanks for the links, lots of great information here!

    • Thanks for your comment. I plan to post a lot more about desexing… Eventually… Will try to get through the Ian Dunbar seminars first!
