We are very happy to introduce Myrtle, our newest resident. Myrtle is 6 weeks old and is the daughter of my Clover, out of a dog in Victoria. She was born a singleton puppy, and we were lucky enough to find two 9-day-old puppies that have been her siblings. Myrtle is 3 days younger than her foster-siblings.
This mating has been a long time in the making, and so far, we are quite happy with the result.
So here is a video of Myrtle, at 6 weeks (and 1 day) old doing some training. It is mostly fun – we are playing tug. I was going to edit out the minute where she goes and entertains herself but that, in itself, is quite amusing. She pretty much knows ‘sit’ and ‘touch’, but and in this video we practice ‘give’ (the tug toy back) and ‘drop’.
I was happy with this training session. We both had fun, and that’s all I really want at this stage.
Is it okay to play tug with puppy this young? Won’t it affect the growing teeth somehow?
Hey Jette. Thanks for your comment! There seems to be some debate about whether tugging can affect a dog’s teeth. For a pet puppy, it probably doesn’t make much difference at all, but for a show dog, many breeders/showers are concerned that tugging may make the bite misaligned… To me, I think that tugging games have little bearing on how their teeth will come through. My three adults, who I all tugged with as puppies, all developed perfect bites later on. I might stop when I get a bad bite. Until then, I’ll keep playing tug because it’s fun! And it’s too big of a skill for my puppies to miss out on.
Myrtle is so cute! Eva loves playing tug too!
Thanks for your comment. I think Myrtle’s pretty cute, too.
What a cute puppy! I’ve never seen training on such a young puppy. But, I’m sure, just like children, you have to start early. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Karen. I like to start early, and get some foundations. Normally puppies go to new homes at 8 weeks, but because I bred Myrtle, I get a head start.
Awesome Thanks
