The Week in Tweets (5th April)

The stuff we tweeted about this week!

Dog Health

A holistic approach to bloat prevention in dogs.

Epilepsy breakthrough in Belgian Shepherd Dogs.

Dogs Trust Vintage: 4 Ways to Improve Your Relationship (with your dog)

Footage of 30 dolphins stranding themselves on a beach – and a raft of beach goers immediately assisting! Pretty cool video.

There’s a video here, but I like the explanation more. Denis Fenzi talks about how she instils value for a jump in a dog through classical conditioning: Lyra 7 months jumping.

Dog Breeds

Ten Steps to Save the Pedigree Dog from the Pedigree Dogs Exposed Blog.  They also had a statement from the Bulldog Breed Club posted on their site.

I was impressed to see the number of dual champions in Brittanys.

The New Book of the Dog (published 1907) is online! It’s fun to look back at all the historic pictures of dog breeds. I plan to get around to actually reading the book soon.

A historical dog breed picture collection.

Why we must drop our obsession with coat colour in purebred dogs.

A collection of photos of the German Shepherd Dog over time.

Dog Welfare (including Shelters and Rescue)

The Dogged Blog asks: Are your pet adoption listings hurting pets? I feel very strongly about this.  Adoption listings shouldn’t be a sob story hoping to ‘scam’ a potential adopter into adopting.  A good listing talks about the good and bad of the pet, and focuses on finding the right home, not a home that ‘feels sorry’ for the pet.

I love these videos from the SAFER site showing that dog shelters can retrain food aggressive dogs, instead of killing them.

Inspirational interview from AnimalCAFE on closing down pet shops: An interview with CAPS.

More good news regarding the Geelong Animal Welfare Society.

Better photography could save the lives of abandoned pets.

How to pick a responsible rescue.

Pet Products

Happy 2nd Birthday to Ruthless Leather, who will be running a promo until the 9th of April (couple of days to go!).

Dog Stories

Love and a Six-Foot-Leash share some lovely stories, and I really loved Chix-A-Lot Friday where dog, Chix, describes the security he gets from his new doggy friend, who he claims is his type of thundershirt: “My New Thundershirt“.

A post called ‘White Lightning‘ from Vets Behaving Badly, describing difficulties owners sometimes have in paying bills.

Honest Dog writes about their experiences in getting a new dog when one passed away: Judge Not.

  1. We looked at the video of Jump training. I love how the dog genuinely enjoys the task at hand.

How I wish I could read Peanut’s mind and know if she’s actually enjoying tricks training.
