Oral Flea Treatment Most Effective in Dogs

This is a guest blog post by Jon Clarke at Aussie Professional Pest Control Sunshine Coast. Thank-you Jon!

Veterinary scientists discovered that oral flea treatment is significantly better at controlling fleas in dogs versus a topical treatment.

In a study published in the January 2013 issue of Veterinary Parasitology, scientists compared which was more effective of the two most popular veterinary flea treatments for dogs: oral spinosad (commonly found in Comfortis) or fipronil/(S)-methoprene topical (commonly found in Frontline).

The Week In Tweets – 12th February 2013

This is our near-weekly segment where we list all the links we’ve shared on Twitter.  It’s always a big post! So grab a coffee and prepare yourself for some serious reading.

Tweet of the Week

A lot of what Roger Abrantes writes is a bit over my head, I admit. It takes a lot of concentrating to read his articles, and I do intend to, at some point, re-write in a simplistic way his latest blog post: “Dog training – let reason prevail over force!” He provides very sensible, rationale, and believable arguments on dominance in dog training. Until I find the time to para phrase this blog post, I suggest you have a read of the original.

Can breeders breed better?

In June last year, I attended a webinar run by ASAP Labratory run by Dr Jacqui Ley on breeding better dogs. I was particularly excited that ASAP ran a webinar as I missed out on a live seminar in Adelaide a few weeks prior.

The seminar was called, “Behaviour = Genetics + Learning + Environment – raising even better dogs“.

Jacqui wanted to challenge breeders: Can we make improvements to the way we breed dogs?

Jacqui’s personal experience with two dogs (pictured above) with anxiety and aggression problems has lead to her being passionate about breeders producing ‘good’ dogs. Continue reading

Desex the bad ones!

The Dog and Cat Management Board in South Australia made a proposal that hit the news this weekend.  You can read all about it here, but basically the sub headline sums it up nicely: Every dog will be desexed unless they can pass a test proving they are good natured under a proposal aimed at reducing attacks.

I find it hard to start where this type of proposal is concerning, but I’ll try!
